Dehydration and Kidney Failure

Pet dehydration and kidney failure are closely related. It’s important to pay attention to the signs and make sure you get proper care for your pet from our vet in Florence if he’s suffering from dehydration.

The Importance of the Kidneys

The kidneys perform a variety of different functions for your pet. The kidneys process any protein waste, filter blood, maintain red blood cells, and balance body water. You will usually not notice anything is wrong with your dog until his or her kidneys are already functioning below their capacity. Many dogs won’t show symptoms until the kidneys are functioning at a low level.

Signs of Kidney Disease and Failure

Usually, the first sign of kidney disease is an increase in drinking and urination. Your pet may start to drink more water than normal, which leads to more urination. This becomes apparent when a dog starts to have accidents during the night when he could previously hold it. Your pet is extra thirsty because of increased fluid loss. In later stages of kidney disease, which lead to kidney failure, you will find your pet has a poor appetite and becomes lethargic. Urine and blood tests are used to determine the presence of kidney failure and to know how severe it is. Some other tests, such as an ultrasound, can be used to determine what caused it.

What Causes Kidney Failure?

Dehydration is often a symptom of kidney failure, but it can also be the cause. Extreme dehydration can also worsen kidney failure. Vomiting and diarrhea decrease blood flow and cause long-term damage to the kidneys. Other things that can cause damage to the kidneys include heatstroke or another disorder that results in massive damage to the body tissues.
