Eye Infections

Most pet owners know very little about pet eye infections. As a result, they fail to realize in time when their pet contracts an eye infection. This often leads to expensive treatments and, in some cases, the pet losing sight. At Cashua Veterinary Care, we are on a mission to educate pet owners in Florence about cat and dog eye infections. Here are a few insights on eye infections in pets.

Common Eye Infections in Pets

Your feline or canine friend can end up with one of these eye infections:

  • Pink eye (Conjunctivitis): This infection results in the inflammation of the mucous membrane, which covers the inner side of the eyelids and the outer surface of the eyeball.
  • Inflammation of the cornea
  • Uveitis: This infection causes inflammation of the inner structures of your pet’s eye, such as the choroid, ciliary body, and iris.
  • Physical abnormalities of the eyelid and tear gland issues

Symptoms of Pet Eye Infections

You should take your pet to a veterinary clinic for an eye exam as soon as you notice the following symptoms.

  • Redness of the eyes: The eyes will appear redder than normal
  • Discharge from the eyes: The discharge can be clear for allergies and viral infections, cloudy or yellowish for dry eye disease, and thick yellowish-green or purulent for a bacterial infection
  • Squinting: This can appear as spasms of the eyelid, increased blinking, or light sensitivity
  • Pawing at the eye: This can indicate pain or itchiness of the eye region
  • Swelling of eyelids: One or both eyelids will look puffy
