What Should I Know About Raising a Puppy?

Raising a puppy can be tough at times, but it’s a rewarding experience adopting a dog and watching him grow into a great dog and a member of the family. To help things go smoothly, here are things to do before bringing your pup home and the first few days.

Before the Dog Comes Home

Training starts immediately! It’s essential that you start the training process the moment you bring the pup home. You’ll want to create a list of dog directions that everyone will follow to prevent any confusion during training and learning commands.

Get an ID tag with your number on it for added safety. If the dog is chipped, your information should be on it.

First Day

Your dog needs time to get used to his new home and family. Be patient and make sure the kids know how to approach the pup without overwhelming him.

Make sure he's safely secured in his crate. This is his safe place where he feels comfortable. Take him where he’ll be relieving himself. Be prepared for accidents, as a new home with unknown sounds and smells can throw off any dog.

Get on a schedule for feeding, playing, and toileting. Be patient and calm during the first few days and try to avoid too much excitement. You want your dog to get settled in.
